Thunderstorms, mild showers to continue for next few days: Met Dept

-

CHENNAI: Over the last few days, the city has been witness to thunderstorms at night, and metrological experts share that the city can look forward to more rains and thunderstorms over the next few days. Mild to moderate showers are also expected.

“Due to the incoming monsoon, we can expect mild to moderate rains and thunderstorms in various parts of the city. We can anticipate cloud formation in the evenings, and showers soon after. This is due to Upper Air Cyclonic circulation (UAC) and approaching monsoons, and is typical of the monsoons,” said S Balachandran, Director, Regional Metrological Department, Chennai.

Light to moderate rain is expected over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal over the weekend. On Wednesday, Meenambakkam saw 6 mm of rainfall and Nungambakkam received 12 mm, while Thursday there was 2.1 mm and 1.1 mm of rainfall recorded respectively.

The reason for the rainfall can be attributed to the heat across the State, said Pradeep John, who runs the page Tamil Nadu Weatherman.

“Heat always matters, irrespective of the UAC. Without heat, no rains will be seen in the leeward area of Tamil Nadu most of the time. In the break of the monsoon period like now, there is always a possibility of a UAC forming in the southern parts of the Bay of Bengal. Though it need not result in rain, like the northeast monsoon, a UAC presence nearby can enhance the longevity of the thunderstorms with supportive atmospheric conditions,” he said.
