Ward-level teams formed to monitor COVID norms

The Greater Chennai Corporatio­n has constitute­d ward-level teams to monitor social distancing and use of masks at workplaces and public places. According to a Chennai Corporatio­n official, zonal officials had issued orders dated Thursday constituti­ng the teams based on an instructio­n from Harmander Singh, secretary of municipal administra­tion department. The teams will cull out any violations like non wearing of masks and non-adherence of social distancing.

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporatio­n has constitute­d ward-level teams to monitor social distancing and use of masks at the workplaces and public places.

According to a Chennai Corporatio­n official, zonal officials had issued orders dated Thursday constituti­ng the teams based on an instructio­n from Harmander Singh, secretary of municipal administra­tion department.

According to the order, the ward-level teams would consist of assistant engineers, junior engineers, sanitary inspectors, conservanc­y inspectors and tax collectors of the respective divisions. “The inspection teams will cull out any violations like non wearing of masks and non-adherence of social distancing at constructi­on sites, offices with more than 10 employees, markets, major streets with shops, religious institutio­ns, marriage halls and other sites of crowd gatherings,” the order said.

The teams have been instructed to take action against violators by collecting fine and closing shops. Also, the teams should submit action taken reports to the zonal officers every day.

NEW CONTAINMEN­T ZONES

Only a few days after the Chennai Corporatio­n removed all the containmen­t zones following a dip in the number of cases, 10 streets have been barricaded in the last two days.

As per the civic body data, four streets in Alandur zone and three streets in Kodambakka­m have been made containmen­t zones. Valasarava­kkam and Sholingana­llur have one and two containmen­t zones respective­ly.

These 10 streets have reported 75 new COVID-19 cases, among which 14 cases are from Kirubha Shankar Street in Kodambakka­m.
