Slight dip in cases even as city surge continues

CHENNAI: The total number of fresh COVID-19 cases in TN dipped a little on Sunday with 5,489 infections being reported even as the Chennai tally continued to surge with 1,348 fresh cases.

The number of cases recorded in Tamil Nadu so far stands at 6,19,996 of which 46,120 cases remain active including 12,283 in Chennai, according to a media bulletin. Fresh cases in Coimbatore too dipped under 500 on Sunday with 474 testing positive over the past 24 hours while Salem reported 357 new cases. Some of the other districts where higher numbers were reported include Chengalpat­tu with 381 cases, Thanjavur with 242 cases, Tiruvallur with 197 cases and Nammakkal with 165 cases. Tiruvarur, Tiruppur and Vellore also reported over a 100 fresh cases.

The districts which reported remarkably low numbers include Perambalur and Ramnad

with 11 and 22 cases respective­ly. Of the 66 deaths recorded, six did not have any pre-existing co-morbid conditions. There were 12 deaths in Chennai, seven deaths in Coimbatore, and six deaths in

Chengalpet­tu. A total of 5,558 patients were discharged following treatment on Sunday, bringing up the total number of recoveries to 5,64,092 so far. There were 1,374 patients discharged in Chennai, 311 in Thanjavur, 306 in Salem, and 301 in Coimbatore. The recovery rate in the city is 90%.

As many as 86,012 samples were tested across 189 public and private testing facilities. This brings the total number of samples tested so far to 77,00,011.
