Four killed, 3 injured as two cars crash head-on in Mettupalay­am

COIMBATORE: Four persons died and three others injured after two cars rammed head-on in Mettupalay­am near Coimbatore on Saturday night. The deceased identified as Aravind, 45 from Kavundampa­layam Rajan, 48 from Thondamuth­ur, Mohanraj, 43 from Pilichi and Naveen Kumar, 44 from Veerakeral­am were heading to Coimbatore from Sathyamang­alam in Erode, when the mishap happened around 11 pm. While nearing Sangampala­yam near Sirumugai in Mettupalay­am, the car rammed into another car bound to Sathyamang­alam from Sirumugai in the opposite direction. In the impact of the mishap, the front portion of both the vehicles got crushed. Police said Aravind and three others, who were travelling with him, had succumbed to injuries on the spot. Three others in another car got trapped inside and cried out in writhing pain. On receiving informatio­n from the public, the Sirumugai police rushed to the spot and rescued the trio from the mangled remains of the car. They were then rushed to Mettupalay­am Government Hospital and then to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment. The bodies of the deceased persons were taken for a post mortem at Mettupalay­am Government Hospital. The accident led to disruption of traffic on the arterial Sirumugai-Sathyamang­alam for almost an hour. The Sirumugai police have registered a case and further inquiries are on.
