Chennai city traffic police remind vehicle owners about number plate sizes

CHENNAI: In a reminder, city traffic police have instructed vehicle owners to strictly adhere to the norms about the number plates as mentioned in the Motor Vehicles Act since they have received a lot of complaints of violations of late. In a release, traffic police have informed that vehicles with the engine capacity below 70 cc should have letters and numbers printed in black and the digits should be 15 mm in height, 2.5 mm in thickness and the space between the letters should be 2.5 mm. Similarly, all the two-wheelers and modified vehicles with two-wheeler engines for differenty abled should have letters 35 mm in height, 7 mm in thickness, whereas the numbers should be 40 mm in height and 7 mm in thickness. The space between them should be 5 mm. While vehicles with engine capacity below 500 cc should have letters and letters 35 mm in height, 7 mm in thickness and 5 mm distance between them, while three wheelers above 500 cc should have letters and numbers in the height of 40 mm. The other vehicles should have the letters 65 mm in height, 10 mm in thickness an 10 mm distance between them. A senior traffic police official when contacted said that having the right size of number plates will help in implementi­ng contactles­s traffic enforcemen­t.
