DMK seeks special Assembly session to adopt resolution against farm laws
CHENNAI: Leader of Opposition MK Stalin has asked Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami to convene the state Assembly to discuss the farm laws enacted by the Centre and pass an appropriate resolution.
In his letter to the Palaniswami, which he submitted to the CM’s secretary through his party MLAs, Stalin said the Chief Minister should immediately recommend the convention of the State Assembly to discuss the farm laws, which would drastic long-term impact farmers, and adopt an appropriate resolution.
Asking the State to move the Supreme Court against the three laws, including the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020, Stalin said the Chief Minister M should realise that it was urgent and imperative to make efforts (convene Assembly and move the Court) to avoid the blame of the state farmers.
Remarking that only states have the authority to enact laws related to agriculture and Land or Land Tenure which are State subjects as per the seventh schedule of the Constitution, Stalin said that they could neither be a mute spectator nor accept the Centre’s infringement of the authority and enactment of the laws. Justifying that the DMK had moved the Supreme Court against the three farm laws keeping in mind the concept of federalism enshrined in the Constitution, the LoP said that he was urged on behalf of DMK, in his capacity as LoP, to convene the Assembly and adopt resolutions against the laws in the House.
Describing agriculture as the ‘backbone’ of the country and farmers as the lifeblood and priceless assets of the state, the DMK president said that only the state government, which understands and fulfils their needs and which has been saving the farmers from middlemen and guaranteeing fair price to their produce, could be the guardian of farmers.
