Finally, Ariyalur water bodies to be desilted

TIRUCHY: After a series of requests from the farming community, the Ariyalur district administra­tion has decided to desilt two major water bodies that play a major role for irrigation as well as a drinking water source and the District Collector inspected these water bodies ahead of the desilt programme on Wednesday.

Inspecting Kurunjan lake and Arasan lake which are to be desilted, District Collector D Rathna said that the strengthen­ing of retaining walls of water bodies after desilting them are undertaken by Kudimarama­thu scheme which ensures water resource to farmers and drinking purposes.

She said that the district administra­tion has sought the support of the state government and the PWD to make the Kurunjan and Arasan lakes for the people’s utility. Since the entire water bodies have been covered with the vegetation and surrounded with the karuvelam trees, the major water resource which could irrigate several thousand acres of land in and around Ariyalur.

On completion of this desilt programme, the groundwate­r level would be recharged and the water source would be made available for the farming works, the Collector said.

According to farmers, these two lakes were major water source for farming in Ariyalur where more than 1000 acre of land would get water for irrigation through these bodies.

The farmers had already made several representa­tions to the district administra­tion for the past few years and the fresh announceme­nt gave them a sort of hope to undergo agricultur­al activities, the farmers from the region said.
