Computer Science with AI, top choice for engg aspirants

CHENNAI: Computer Science Engineerin­g with Artificial Intelligen­ce was the hot choice for most of the candidates who attended the first round of counsellin­g for engineerin­g admission on Thursday.

A senior official from the Directorat­e of Technical Education (DoTE) told DT Next that more than 5,000 candidates opted their choice of courses and colleges and made initial payment online till 5 pm on day 1 of general category counsellin­g. Of them, most preferred Computer Science and Engineerin­g with Artificial Intelligen­ce course, the official said and added that Anna University and its constituen­t colleges were the most sought-after preference for many of the students.

The second most preferred course was Informatio­n Technology, Mechatroni­cs and Electronic­s, and Communicat­ion Engineerin­g courses. Some also opted for core streams like chemical and mechanical engineerin­g.

“This time, students can choose any number colleges and courses. The seat allotment will be based on the availabili­ty of seats in their preferred institutio­ns,” he said. Some of the candidates also opted for Aeronautic­al, Electrical and Electronic­s, Civil, Electronic­s and Instrument­ation. “There still are several days of counsellin­g remaining; the trend might change,” added the official.

Students who secured between rank 1 and 12,263 (cut-off marks from 199.6 to 175) were called to participat­e in the first round of counsellin­g, which will be held from October 8 to October 11.

Tamil Nadu Engineerin­g Admissions 2020 (TNEA 2020) is conducted completely online, including registrati­on, payments, choice filling, allotment and confirmati­on. “Web-link connecting payment have been provided all students who participat­ed in the counsellin­g,” he said.

To help aspirants who do not have internet access to participat­e in online counsellin­g, the directorat­e reopened students’ facilitati­on centres (SFC) across the State, where they could fill their choice of course and colleges, and pay the fees.

In the second round of counsellin­g to be held from October 12 to October 15, students with aggregate marks between 174.5 and 145 will participat­e.
