8-yr-old boy snatches bag with jewels mistaking it for food, caught by public

An eight-year-old boy, who fled with a cloth bag containing jewels, was nabbed by the public and handed over to police on Thursday. The incident occurred when a pawn shop owner on old Katpadi road, who came with some jewels in a cloth bag, was noted by the boy. When the owner laid down the bag to open the shop, the boy snatched his bag and fled the scene. Following this, he raised an alarm, after which locals chased and caught the boy, thrashed him and handed him over to the Katpadi police. Investigat­ion revealed that the boy was from Madurai and belonged to a family of bangle sellers, who had come to Katpadi for business. The boy, who was reportedly hungry, stole the bag mistaking it as food. After warning the boy sternly, he was handed over to his parents.
