TN sees decline in COVID cases; 57 new deaths, active cases at 40,959

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu recorded yet another day of decline in new COVID-19 cases with 4,389 fresh cases, and added 57 deaths to the toll on Friday. Adding these new cases, the State has so far recorded 6,79,191, but only 40,959 are active cases.

Chennai reported 1,140 more cases on Friday, taking the number of active cases to 13,289. Chennai accounted for 1,87,852 of the total of 6.79 lakh plus cumulative cases. Of the 10,529 deaths reported in the state, Chennai’s share is 3,488 till date.

Among the other districts, Coimbatore recorded 387 new cases, while Chengalpat­tu had 261, Salem 244, Tiruvallur 195, Tirupur 147, and Erode 138.

As many as 57 more deaths were notified in the State. Six among the deceased, including a 25-year-old woman, did not have comorbidit­ies, said the bulletin from State Health Department. Chennai recorded 15 deaths, followed by Erode with 5 deaths, while Tiruchy and Chengalpat­tu had four deaths each.

Recoveries continued to outnumber new infections with 5,245 patients being discharged from hospitals across the State on Friday, bringing the total number of recoveries to 6,27,703. The recovery rate in the city currently stands at around 94 per cent.

The State tested 91,245 samples at 192 public and private testing laboratori­es. With the total number of samples tested so far currently stands at 87,66,038. As many as 89,497 persons were tested in the past 24 hours. So far, 85,19,238 people have been tested in Tamil Nadu for COVID-19.
