‘Devotee’ prays before emptying 2 temple hundials

-

CHENNAI: A ‘devotee’ who broke into Marundeeswarar temple in Tiruvanmiyur, was found praying and putting a coin in hundial before emptying two hundials at the temple on Thursday night.

Police, after watching the surveillance camera footage, said the man acted like a true devotee after entering the locked temple.

“He was seen praying to the God and putting some coin inside the hundial so that he receives the blessings from the deity in the sanctum sanctorum to complete his mission without any hindrance,” police noted saying that they are seriously trying to identify the burglar. He had emptied two hundials kept on the temple premise before making good his escape.

The theft came to light on Friday morning when the staff reached the temple to open it. After finding the hundials broken open, they informed the Tiruvanmiyur police.

The police team that arrived at the temple, on browsing the CCTV footage, found the intruder praying before the deity before emptying the hundials.

Though the temple premises is protected with high walls, the man seems to have used a building nearby to get on top of the wall and jump inside.

The temple administration believes that there could have been nearly Rs 1 lakh in the hundials as the temple was reopened after the lockdown more than a month back.

Tiruvanmiyur police have registered a case and are investigating further.
