With rise in foot­fall of tourists in Ko­daikanal, SOP vi­o­la­tors pun­ished

With a rise in tourists’ foot­fall in Ko­daikanal dur­ing the week­end, the au­thor­i­ties have been keep­ing a close eye on the tourists to check whether the Stan­dard Op­er­at­ing Pro­ce­dure (SOP) to con­tain the spread of COVID-19 is adopted by tourists as per the guid­ance of Min­istry of Health and Fam­ily Wel­fare. The tourists sans face­masks and fail­ing to main­tain so­cial dis­tance were fined nearly Rs 50,000 on Satur­day alone. Each of those with­out face­mask was fined Rs 200 and Rs 500 against any­body found vi­o­lat­ing the so­cial dis­tanc­ing norms, Ko­daikanal Sub Col­lec­tor Si­vaguru Prabakaran said on Sun­day. Ko­daikanal Block Med­i­cal Of­fi­cer, M. Aravindh Kr­ish­nan, when con­tacted, said fine of around Rs 40, 000 has been col­lected from vi­o­la­tors on Sun­day. A state-owned bus was found with 78 pas­sen­gers in vi­o­la­tion of SOP, which al­lows only 35 pas­sen­gers to board any bus. Ten pas­sen­gers in­side the bus were fined for not wear­ing face­masks and were pro­vided with masks im­me­di­ately. The spe­cial team then warned the driver and con­duc­tor of the bus to fol­low norms. Cine ac­tor Aditi Balan, who was among three oth­ers trav­el­ling in a car, was fined for not wear­ing a mask. The Block Med­i­cal Of­fi­cer also added that re­ceipts were be­ing pro­vided to vi­o­la­tors af­ter im­pos­ing fines on them ac­cord­ing to the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act.
