With rise in footfall of tourists in Kodaikanal, SOP violators punished
With a rise in tourists’ footfall in Kodaikanal during the weekend, the authorities have been keeping a close eye on the tourists to check whether the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to contain the spread of COVID-19 is adopted by tourists as per the guidance of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The tourists sans facemasks and failing to maintain social distance were fined nearly Rs 50,000 on Saturday alone. Each of those without facemask was fined Rs 200 and Rs 500 against anybody found violating the social distancing norms, Kodaikanal Sub Collector Sivaguru Prabakaran said on Sunday. Kodaikanal Block Medical Officer, M. Aravindh Krishnan, when contacted, said fine of around Rs 40, 000 has been collected from violators on Sunday. A state-owned bus was found with 78 passengers in violation of SOP, which allows only 35 passengers to board any bus. Ten passengers inside the bus were fined for not wearing facemasks and were provided with masks immediately. The special team then warned the driver and conductor of the bus to follow norms. Cine actor Aditi Balan, who was among three others travelling in a car, was fined for not wearing a mask. The Block Medical Officer also added that receipts were being provided to violators after imposing fines on them according to the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act.
