Class 3 boy falls to death from 10th floor in Vepery

CHENNAI: A sevenyear-old boy who was playing on the terrace of a 10-storey apartment fell to death after the fibreglass ceiling he stepped on broke, in Vepery on Thursday evening.

The deceased, Rishi Kataria was a Class 3 student of a private school and only son of Rohit Kataria, a native of Rajasthan who runs an electric shop in Sowcarpet. Rohit, wife Narmada and their son Rishi reside on the eighth floor of the building on Jermiah Road.

The incident happened around 6.30 pm when Rishi

reportedly went to the terrace alone to play. A few minutes later, he fell from there to the ground and died on the spot.

Shocked fellow residents alerted the Vepery police and his body was sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examinatio­n.

After preliminar­y inquiries, police officials said that the fibreglass had been set up as the ceiling for the common area in the middle of the structure for the natural light. "Rishi was tall enough to climb the wall to step on the fibreglass," said officials. A case has been registered and further investigat­ion is on.

Drunk man injured after fall from second floor In another incident, a 25-year-old inebriated man who fell from the second floor of a building in Otteri has been admitted at Government Stanley Medical College Hospital. The victim, David of SS Puram, is an autoricksh­aw driver, said police. David was allegedly consuming liquor on the terrace of the building, and is suspected to slipped and fallen from there while under the influence of alcohol. The Otteri police have registered a case and further investigat­ion is on.
