Woman on visit to Amman temple at Madurantakam immolates self

CHENNAI: A 36-year-old woman who came to visit a temple in Madurantakam immolated self in the wee hours of Monday. The deceased U Thangam of Teynampet was unwell and was visiting hospitals recently. On Saturday, Thangam, her mother and motherin-law visited Batrakaliamman temple in Indalur village and was asked to stay for 20 days and attend daily pujas. They were made to stay at a place near the temple. Around 2 am on Monday, Thangam, who went to the kitchen, doused herself in kerosene and set herself on fire. She died on the spot. Acharapakkam police sent the body for postmortem and registered a case. Police said Thangam had attempted suicide a few weeks ago also.
