BJP pulls significan­t lead in bypolls

NEW DELHI: Deepavali seems to have arrived a few days early for the BJP on Tuesday. Even as counting of votes was under way in Assembly by-elections in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and in 8 other states, the saffron party has managed to pull a magnificen­t lead in a majority of seats across the states. In MP, the ruling party was leading in 12 seats of the 28 Assembly constituen­cies. In Gujarat, Karnataka and Telangana, BJP won in all the eight, two and one seats, respective­ly. In Manipur, BJP candidate Oinam Lukhoi Singh won the by-election to the Wangoi seat, while saffron party candidates were leading from two other constituen­cies. The BJP retained six seats and the SP hung on to its Malhani constituen­cy in the UP bypolls for seven Assembly seats.

BHOPAL/LUCKNOW/AHMEDABAD: The BJP on Tuesday swept the Assembly by-elections held last week with leads and wins in more than 40 of 59 seats across 11 states, including Madhya Pradesh where it won 16 and was ahead in 3 of 28 constituen­cies, according to Election Commission trends.

India’s ruling party bagged all the eight seats in Gujarat for which by-elections were held and six of seven constituen­cies in Uttar Pradesh that went to the polls in the first pan-India electoral exercise in the pandemic.

Madhya Pradesh: In a high-stake electoral battle in the central Indian state, the BJPled Shivraj Singh Chouhan government earned the upperhand over the Congress and also saved its government. BJP won 16 seats and was ahead in 3 seats leaving the Congress behind with six wins and three leads, according to Election Commission figures at 10.30 pm on Tuesday.

Gujarat: The BJP held sway over the party-ruled state with wins in all eight seats. As party workers broke into celebratio­ns and burst firecracke­rs at its headquarte­rs in Gandhinaga­r, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani told reporters his party’s performanc­e was a ‘trailer’ for the upcoming elections to local bodies and the 2022 Assembly polls.

Uttar Pradesh: Of the seven seats, the ruling BJP won six seats and the Samajwadi Party one. Barring Malhani, which was with the SP, the other seats were in the ruling BJP’s kitty. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav alleged on Monday that the BJP was involved in “rigging”.

Manipur: According to Election Commission data, the BJP has won four seats and an Independen­t being voted unopposed in one.

Karnataka: Ruling BJP won both seats for which bypolls were held, wwresting Sira from the JD(S) and Rajarajesh­wari Nagar from the Congress. It created history by recording its first ever victory in Sira Assembly segment Dr CM Rajesh Gowda winning with a margin of over 12,000 votes. In RR Nagar, Munirathan­a emerged winner with a margin of over 58,000 votes against Congress’ Kusuma.

Jharkhand: The state’s ruling coalition retained both Dumka and Bermo, the former going to the JMM and the latter to the Congress, said Joint Chief Electoral Officer Hiralal Mandal.

Odisha: The state’s ruling Biju Janata Dal won both the Balasore and Tirtol seats for which by-elections were held.

Haryana: In a big win for the Congress, its candidate Indu Raj Narwal defeated the BJP’s candidate, Olympian wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt, in the Baroda assembly seat in BJP-ruled Haryana. The Congress retained the seat with Narwal winning by over 10,000 votes, said officials.

Chhattisga­rh: The state’s ruling Congress won the Marwahi seat that was necessitat­ed due to the death of Janata Congress Chhattisga­rh (J) MLA and former chief minister Ajit Jogi.

Telangana: The BJP emerged on top of three-cornered contest in the Dubbak Assembly constituen­cy.

Nagaland: The National Democratic Progressiv­e Party bagged the Southern Angami-I seat in Kohima while an Independen­t candidate won the Pungro-Kiphire assembly segment in Kiphire district.
