Brace for heavy rains in the coming days
CHENNAI: The widespread rain in the city and its neighbourhood is likely to continue, predicted the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai, adding that the city is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.
There were mild showers in several parts of Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur since Wednesday morning, and the Northeast monsoon has more in store this week for Chennai and neighbouring districts. According to RMC officials, thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Karaikkal.
The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in Chennai and thunderstorm with light to moderate rain with isolated heavy falls are expected in some areas until Friday. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be 31 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respectively.
Weather blogger Pradeep John said that active phase of monsoon would start in the coming days, with heavy spells expected over the Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur belt. He added that a weather phenomenon, Madden-Julian Oscillation, which is change in the weather due to eastward movement of the cloud and rainfall, is likely to be observed.
On Wednesday, Nungambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 31.1 degree Celsius and minimum of 29.7 degree Celsius. Meenambakkam recorded maximum temperature of 30.7 degree Celsius and minimum temperature of 29.9 degree Celsius.
