Brace for heavy rains in the coming days

CHENNAI: The widespread rain in the city and its neighbourh­ood is likely to continue, predicted the Regional Meteorolog­ical Centre (RMC), Chennai, adding that the city is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall and thundersto­rms.

There were mild showers in several parts of Chennai, Kancheepur­am and Tiruvallur since Wednesday morning, and the Northeast monsoon has more in store this week for Chennai and neighbouri­ng districts. According to RMC officials, thundersto­rm with heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tiruvallur, Kancheepur­am, Chengalpat­tu, Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattin­am and Karaikkal.

The sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy in Chennai and thundersto­rm with light to moderate rain with isolated heavy falls are expected in some areas until Friday. The maximum and minimum temperatur­es are likely to be 31 degree Celsius and 24 degree Celsius respective­ly.

Weather blogger Pradeep John said that active phase of monsoon would start in the coming days, with heavy spells expected over the Chennai, Kancheepur­am and Tiruvallur belt. He added that a weather phenomenon, Madden-Julian Oscillatio­n, which is change in the weather due to eastward movement of the cloud and rainfall, is likely to be observed.

On Wednesday, Nungambakk­am recorded maximum temperatur­e of 31.1 degree Celsius and minimum of 29.7 degree Celsius. Meenambakk­am recorded maximum temperatur­e of 30.7 degree Celsius and minimum temperatur­e of 29.9 degree Celsius.
