CHENNAI: A separate unit for COVID-19 positive patients with comorbid conditions like cardiac, renal, haematological and neurological problems was launched by Health Minister C Vijayabaskar at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital. The Minister also honoured the doctors managing pandemic cases for their contribution in the battle against the viral infection.

The third floor of the third block was inaugurated by the Health Minister, with separate wings for specific comorbidities. “COVID patients who required treatment for comorbidities were sent to government hospitals, as they were critical. The unit at the hospital provided haemodialysis 605 COVID patients, which is the highest in the country. A dedicated dialysis unit with 10 machines, and two additional machines each have been installed in R block and Tower 3. The radiology department of the hospital has conducted more than 10,000 CT scans during the pandemic.

The team of assistant professors, postgraduate doctors, dialysis technicians and staff nurses were honoured by the Health Minister. Chief consultant doctors of several departments at the hospital were also honoured.
