State records 9,344 fresh cases, 39 deaths

CHENNAI: The surge in daily cases of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu is inching towards 10,000-mark with 9,344 fresh cases being reported on Saturday, including 30 cases imported from other states. The total number of pandemic cases in the State has now reached 9,80,728.

The active cases of COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu have crossed 65,000-mark as there are 65,635 cases including home quarantine cases, being treated across the State.

Meanwhile, the highest number of cases of COVID-19 across the State were reported in Chennai at 2,884. Among other districts, Chengalpat­tu had 807 new cases and Coimbatore 652. Thiruvallu­r recorded 389 cases, and Tiruchy 323. Several other districts including Kancheepur­am, Madurai, Salem, Tirunelvel­i, Thoothukud­i and Tirupur reported more than 200 cases.

The death toll in the State is also increasing as 39 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported on Saturday, including nine deaths of those who did not have any comorbidit­ies. So far, a total of 13,071 deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported in Tamil Nadu.

As many as 5,263 more people were discharged from several hospitals across the State, taking the total recoveries to 9,02,022. With the increasing cases, the number of samples tested have also been increased to more than one lakh on a daily basis. A total of 1,00,804 samples were tested for COVID-19 on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 1,13,349 people were vaccinated against COVID-19 in Tamil Nadu, including 39,889 elderly people and 59,203 people aged above 45 years. So far, a total of 47,05,473 people have been vaccinated against COVID-19 in the State.
