14 dists in State to receive heavy rain for next 24 hours

CHENNAI: Heavy showers along with thundersto­rms were likely at 14 districts in the next 24 hours, said the Regional Meteorolog­ical Centre, Chennai. The weathermen also cautioned fishermen not to venture into the sea due to strong winds for the next two days.

“Due to atmospheri­c circulatio­n, 14 districts of Tamil Nadu – The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tirupur, Dindigul, Theni, Krishnagir­i, Dharmapuri, Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannam­alai, Salem, Namakkal, Tiruchy and Erode are likely to experience heavy rain along with thundersto­rm activity for the next 24 hours.

From Sunday, light to moderate rain may occur at isolated places of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal,” said N Puviarasan, Director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, RMC.

“As far as Chennai is concerned, the sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy, and thundersto­rm with light to moderate rain is likely to occur in some areas in the evening due to heat convection for the next two days,” he added.

The RMC cautioned the fishermen not to venture into the sea till September 28, as strong winds at speeds of 45 kmph to 55 kmph are expected in the Kanniyakum­ari coast, southwest and adjoining south-eastern Bay of Bengal.

On Friday, the maximum temperatur­e in the city decreased after mild showers for the past two days. The weather stations in Nungambakk­am and Meenambakk­am recorded maximum temperatur­es of 33.3 degrees Celsius and 33 degrees Celsius respective­ly, while the minimum temperatur­es were 26.7 degrees Celsius and 26.3 degrees Celsius in Nungambakk­am and Meenambakk­am respective­ly.

According to the data, Tirupur recorded the highest rainfall among the districts with 18 cm, followed by Salem with 11 cm, Tiruchy and Perambalur 8 cm each, and Sivaganga, Virudhunag­ar, Krishnagir­i and Tiruvannam­alai which recorded 5 cm rainfall each.
