DMK calls for dist secys meet on Dec 18

-

CHENNAI:

The ruling DMK has called for a meeting of its district secretaries, MPs and MLAs this weekend, but did not state the agenda.

DMK general secretary Duraimurugan on Sunday announced that the meeting of district secretaries, MPs and MLAs would be chaired by party president MK Stalin, who is also the Chief Minister, at Kalaignar Hall in the party headquarters Anna Arivalayam on Saturday, December 18.

Though Duraimurugan did not state the agenda of the meeting, for which he had sought compulsory attendance of the invitees, it is likely to discuss the ensuing urban civic body polls as the Supreme Court has set a January deadline to complete the urban local body elections in the state.

If sources in the party are to be believed, the DMK leadership could ascertain the views of its district heads on the current public mood to take a call on the civic poll issue. Speculation was rife on the corridors of power till last week that the ruling party could likely utilise the recent floods in the state to defer the urban civic elections briefly.

Leadership of the DMK could also take stock of the public assessment of the eight-month-old government, especially the engagement in flood relief activities, from its district secretaries.

The DMK district secretaries meeting has also been closely watched by the allies who are confident that the high command could give instructions to its district bosses on handling the seat sharing talks to be held at district level for the urban local body polls.
