A special Siddha Health Care Centre for COVID patients at Periyar Thidal in Vepery was inaugurated by Health Minister Ma Subramanian in the presence of HR&CE Minister PK Sekarbabu on Tuesday.

Subramanian said COVID cases are rising on a daily basis and about 50 per cent of the new cases on Tuesday were reported in Chennai. “As many as 22 screening centres are to be set up for the initial testing in Chennai and 15 of them will be operational from Tuesday. A team of physicians will be available in each zone to inquire about the health of the patients over the phone and provide them with counselling and treatment. A pulse oximeter will also be provided on behalf of the Corporation,” the Health Minister said.

Siddha Care Centres set up by the Department of Indian Medicine and Homeopathy during the second wave had treated 28,808 persons.

The Minister said, as per the new guidelines, people with mild symptoms, especially those who are completely vaccinated, can be treated in isolation. They can resume their normal work after five days of reporting negative.

Regarding vaccination of children aged 15-18 years, he said 33.46 lakh teens have to be vaccinated in total and close to 10 per cent of them were vaccinated on Monday. There are about 27 lakh vaccines in stock for this age group.

In response to a question on non-functional Amma mini-clinics, the Subramanian said they were started during the last regime but they have only been running temporarily for a year and the details of beneficiaries have not been shared yet. The temporary project is over, however, the work has been extended until March to assign medical staff from these clinics to COVID care services and other works at the healthcare facilities in the State.
