AMET VARSITY: MAKING GREAT STRIDES IN MARITIME EDUCATION

Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) University has been making great strides in higher education for 31 years.

Globally, AMET University has been recognised as one of the top three universiti­es in the Performanc­e Indicators in Maritime Education and Training (PIMET) ranking list published by the Internatio­nal Associatio­n of Maritime Universiti­es (IAMU), Japan.

Dr J Ramachandr­an received the ‘Award of Excellence’ instituted by the National Maritime Day Committee, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India from TK Ramachandr­an, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways at the Global Maritime India Summit held in Mumbai in December 2023.

Formed in 1993 as India’s pioneer maritime educationa­l institutio­n, AMET University, which was upgraded to a university status in 2007, has expanded into a multidisci­plinary university.

Keeping in mind the employabil­ity and knowledge enhancemen­t of the students, all the courses offered at AMET University are offered as courses linked to companies.

According to MOUs with the world’s largest shipping companies like AP Moller Maersk, Goodwood, NYK, Sonangol, V.Ships, Wallems, Shell, Chevron, Stena Bil, B.Sc Nautical Science, BE, and other courses are being offered so that deserving students who can enrol in courses like Marine Engineerin­g can be given job appointmen­t orders at the time of admission.

Also, all computer-related courses are offered as industry-linked courses with specialise­d training in collaborat­ion with reputed companies like IBM, C.Doc, Red Hat.

B.Com in associatio­n with leading institutes like Confederat­ion of Indian Industry (CII) and JK Shah-Veranda and Special degree programs are also offered.

MBA in associatio­n with Kaveri Hospital and Higher education in Hospital Administra­tion is also offered. As such, all courses at AMET University are directly linked to industry, semester abroad programs at foreign universiti­es, and the opportunit­y to conduct research at a junior level, making students eligible for higher positions in multinatio­nal companies.

To expand its educationa­l activities, centres of excellence of various companies are being created in the AMET Knowledge Park complex, which is being constructe­d in an area of about 140 acres, in Mugaiyur Thenpattin­am village, Chengalpat­tu district.

As part of that, the Maersk Centre of Excellence offers placements to approximat­ely 240 students per year upon enrollment.

AMET Knowledge Park is to be developed as an off-campus of AMET University as an integrated campus comprising many such centres of excellence that cannot be found anywhere else.
