MMC doc escapes gunfire from classmate’s ex-lover

-

CHENNAI: A 26-year-old doctor pursuing post-graduation at Madras Medical College (MMC) had a close shave after two men opened fire from a country gun outside Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Sunday.

While the public managed to chase and catch the shooter, a youth from Uttar Pradesh, his accomplice who masterminded the attack fled the scene. Later, city police claimed he was arrested in Vijayawada. Preliminary investigations revealed that it was over a broken affair, officials said.

The incident happened near a tea stall outside the hospital. When Dr Rohan of Vellore, a first-year PG student, was walking alone, a duo confronted him. Rohan noticed the country gun and ran away. Though one of them opened fire, he missed the target.

Public who heard the gunshot caught hold of one of the perpetrators, Rithik Kumar, while another person fled the scene. Rithik was handed over to the Flower Bazaar police. Probe revealed that Rithik had accompanied his cousin, Amit Kumar, to travel to Chennai a week ago to murder.

Officials said Amit’s estranged girlfriend is also a PG student at MMC. He was enraged over her social media posts with Rohan, and assumed that he was the reason for their breakup.

“They were following his movements and planned to confront him when he was alone. They had bought the gun for Rs 5,000,” said a police officer. Rithik is a college student while Amit is a graduate, police said.

A special team nabbed Amit from Vijayawada and is bringing him to Chennai, police said. Rithik was produced before a magistrate and remanded in judicial custody.
