Many Chennai voters fume as their names go missing from list
CHENNAI: On Friday, several ambitious voters were seen upset with the poll officials after their names were missing from the voters’ list at the polling booths. After venting out their anger, the citizens who came to exercise their democratic rights returned sans voting.
Actor Soori who acted in movies like Viduthalai and his wife expressed disappointment as they were denied entry into the booth. As their names were missing in the voters roll, the couple went back without voting.
There were senior citizens who complained about the difficulties of coming in scorching sun and denial of their voting rights. In RKM Sarada Vudtakata Nidek Girls higher secondary school, T Nagar Gayathri Manian, a 67-year-old woman from
T Nagar fumed, “After coming here only I was aware that my name was not there in the list. Aged people like us come here and are denied our right to vote as a citizen. For the past 35 years, I have been residing in the same place and this is the first time such an incident has occurred and I expect that an alternative solution is made.” When DT Next visited Stella Mary’s College in Teynampet there was a commotion as a middle aged man who came to vote was denied to vote as his name was not found in the list.At Don Bosco Matriculation School in Chennai Central constituency a man in his early 50s also had an argument with the officials as his name was deleted in the list and was not permitted to vote.
Issues will be rectified after polls, says DEO Radhakrishnan
With several residents alleging that their names are missing from the electoral roll, Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner and District Election Officer J Radhakrishnan assured that the issues will be rectified after the elections are over as corrections could not be made on the poll day.
After casting his vote in Thiruvanmiyur, Radhakrishnan said that polling is peaceful. “Polling was delayed in some booths due to machine glitches. We have appointed 2 software engineers for each of the assembly segments in Chennai. Machines have been fixed and polling has commenced in all the booths, “he added.
Radhakrishnan said that of the total polling personnel, around 57 per cent personnel are women.
