Five med­i­cal stu­dents held for rag­ging Dalit ju­nior

Ben­galuru: Five stu­dents of ESI Med­i­cal Col­lege in Ben­galuru’s Ra­ja­ji­na­gar have been ar­rested by the po­lice for al­legedly rag­ging a first-year Dalit stu­dent of the col­lege. The ar­rested - Karan Sharma of Ra­jasthan, Gau­tham of Mad­hya Pradesh, Rahul Jha of New Delhi, Shub­hav of Ut­tar Pradesh and In­dra­jit of Ut­tarak­hand - all fi­nal-year MBBS stu­dents al­legedly used to ha­rass the fresh­ers. On De­cem­ber 24 night, the ac­cused barged into the vic­tim’s room abused him ver­bally by in­vok­ing his caste and slapped him, re­port­edly be­cause he did not wish them ear­lier in the day. Act­ing on the com­plaint filed by the vic­tim the po­lice have booked the five stu­dents un­der var­i­ous sec­tions of Kar­nataka Ed­u­ca­tion Act, IPC and SC & ST (Pre­ven­tion of Atroc­i­ties) Act. “We pro­duced the ac­cused be­fore the court, which re­manded them in ju­di­cial cus­tody,” said an in­ves­ti­ga­tion of­fi­cer.
