MY ECO ENERGY HAS RECENTLY introduced the biodiesel called ‘Indizel’. It is derived from vegetable oil, unlike conventional petroleum diesel, while being chemically modified to make it more suitable for running regular diesel engines, without any modifications and complying with industry specifications. We used this fuel in the Pajero, on a daily basis run of close to 100 kilometres. People who travel in or drive the car on a regular basis can tell the difference almost immediately. Power delivery and fuel economy have also seen a slight improvement. The engine runs a little smoother, probably due to the higher lubricity of biodiesel. But the biggest and most noticeable difference is the absence of smoke and odour, which had started to become an issue on my car since it has over 2,25,000 kilometres on the odo. In an older car: the strong solvent properties of biodiesel will clean out the fuel system and can clog the fuel filter. If you plan to use Indizel, it would be a good idea to replace the fuel filter after your first few tankfuls of biodiesel. The results should theoretically be better in a modern common-rail diesel-engined car; we will be checking in the near future. An added benefit of biodiesel is that due to its much higher lubricity compared to petroleum diesel, engine life is extended due to less component wear and less waste build-up. Biofuels are carbon dioxide neutral and do not add new carbon to the atmosphere, since they come from renewable plants which consume CO2. Sulphur dioxide and sulphates (major contributors to acid rain) are completely eliminated since sulphur does not exist in veggie oil. Carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon emissions are also reduced. Homegrown fuels like Indizel also reduce the dependency on foreign oil. My Eco Energy have started off with outlets for Indizel in Mumbai and Pune, while plans to open more outlets across Maharashtra and the rest of the country.
