E RCEDES-BENZ INDIA celebrated 20 years of assembly of the E-Class in India last month, the longest tenure for any luxury car model here.
The first ‘Made in India’ Mercedes-Benz to hit the roads was the W124 model in 1995. It was also the third car to get the E-Class nameplate. The letter’ E’ which stands for Einspritzmotor (German for fuel injection engine) was used as a suffix (300E for example), but after 1993, the company changed the nomenclature and the E-Class was born. After this came the W210 model which was launched with a four-cylinder engine, instead of the bulky six. The third generation, the W211 was launched in 2002. Come 2009, the company replaced the W211 model with the W212 model and with it came a host of new features such as park assist, attention assist, lane assist and night view assist. After investing over a billion, the company replaced the W212 with the W213 which was launched this year.
To commemorate this amazing feat, Mercedes-Benz launched a new variant of the E-Class christened as the ‘Edition E.’
