own against its rivals but the Disco isn’t really made for the hustle. You have to cane the engine to get it to move the prodigious 2.2 tonnes with any urgency and when you give it everything the engine gets surprisingly vocal. Also there just isn’t the low-down effortlessness that you get with V6 diesels, an effortlessness that is so obviously the main trait of the Discovery. And, oh, the motor has a healthy appetite for petrol, really healthy if you release all 335 of those horses.

So you take a deep breath, relax, and soak in the ambience of a very nice cabin. The switch to a monocoque and also the longer wheelbase has really done wonders in liberating cabin space and this is a bright airy and wonderfully spacious cabin, so much so that you can stick normal sized adults in the third row and they won’t hatch plans to murder you over dinner.
