The Bullitt is back!
Steve McQueen’s Mustang is reborn in a new avatar
STEVE MCQUEEN SAID, “WHEN I believe in something, I fight like hell for it”. Ford has done enough this time to prove him right. For 40 long years the original Mustang used in the 1968 Hollywood flick ‘Bullitt’ was missing, sitting in various states of disrepair, until its owner contacted Ford in 2016. The timing was perfect, because when Ford took the wraps off the 2019 Mustang Bullitt, the original 1968 green 'Stang rolled on stage too at the North American International Auto Show. And the unveiling was done by… wait for it… Molly McQueen, grand-daughter of Steve McQueen! Got a healthy dose of nostalgia yet?
The latest Bullitt is more powerful than a regular Mustang GT and is de-badged just like the original car. It is propelled by the same 5-litre, V8, NA motor that does duty in the regular Mustang, though it has been pumped up to produce maximum power of 474bhp (up by 23bhp) and a peak torque of 569Nm. A six-speed manual 'box is the only choice for the Bullitt giving the option for McQueen fans to double-clutch downshift, just like in the movie. And it even gets the cool, cue ball shifter knob!
