WHAT A TERRIFIC BATTLE IT WAS FOR THE CAR of the Year crown at the 10th edition of the Times Auto Awards, in partnership with evo India and Fast Bikes India. With the pits of the MMRT track, the venue for our jury round, filled with truly excellent cars and SUVs we knew the jury would have a tough task on their hands, but nobody expected the top two to be separated by just one point. One point! Never in the history of these awards have the results been so close and it just goes to highlight the depth of talent in the Indian automotive industry.

These awards work on a very simple formula. Qualifying vehicles, launched between December 1, 2016 and November 30, 2017 are grouped into the individual sub-categories. After extensive driving on the track, on a mix of internal roads, and even on the off-road tracks of the MMRT, the jury sits down to pick the winners of each class. With the validation done on-site by independent agency Metric Consulting, the class winners then go into the final reckoning for the Car of the Year, using a transparent scoring system based on the European Car of the Year. And these are the only awards that present all individual jury scores at the presentation of the award.

After two days of driving, testing and deliberations emerged a Car of the Year to join the illustrious list of winners over the past decade of these awards – the Tata Nexon. Taking home two additional awards, the Design of the Year and Compact SUV of the Year, the Nexon was also the most awarded vehicle at the 10th edition of these awards. It looks fantastic, has excellent dynamics, strong powertrains, great interior packaging and that crucial desirability to appeal to the Indian car buyer. The Tata Nexon is a worthy winner of the Car of the Year title.
