Much awaited unveils from EICMA, Kymco’s electric superbike concept, the return of Jawa and other news

ALL BUILDERS OF SUPERBIKES ASPIRE TO BREAK the sound barrier. Most of them have been trying to do so by releasing more horses from their internal combustion engines. Taiwanese manufacturer Kymco however, which is also one of the world’s largest scooter makers, has decided to take a different route.

The company unveiled the radical SuperNex electric sportbike at the recent EICMA 2018. Like all other all electric two-wheelers the SuperNex uses a battery and a motor for propulsion. What’s different though is that this one sports a six-speed transmission! According to Kymco, and probably rightly so, electric motorcycles can’t reach great speeds because most of the power is made in a band and all this power is usually transmitted by a CVT that has limitations where top speed is concerned. Kymco’s solution, an innovative one in the electric two-wheeler industry, is the use of a manual gearbox. They say it will allow the rider to access the wide power and torque band, easily.

But how do you know when to change gears? Another interesting innovation awaits in the form of an acoustic motor. The motor used in the SuperNex amplifies the sound so that the rider knows when to shift gears. The bike is equipped with a slipper clutch and is capable of performing clutch-less shifts, both up and down. A very interesting proposition from a manufacturer that’s now poised to make an Indian debut.
