“Only 11 lakh rupees!” is everybody’s first retort
RAVE REVIEWS, THAT’S WHAT THE Venue has received in our tests and comparisons and I can see why — it really is very good. I’ve been using the small Hyundai for the city commute for the past three weeks and first impressions are it doesn’t feel built to a price, unlike other sub-4 metre cars. The all-black interiors for instance, they really feel premium and there isn’t anything to complain about in the cabin. Wireless charging, Apple CarPlay, a good enough sound system, nice meaty steering wheel, even an air purifier — and of course the sunroof that buyers seem to insist upon on top-end variants.
Our long termer is the 1-litre turbo with the DCT gearbox and it delivers really spirited performance in the city, what the boys call sporty. It is fun to drive! The engine is also refined though there is an irregular vibration at idle that gives away the fact that it is a 3-cylinder motor. The gearbox shifts quickly enough though I do miss the fact that it
doesn’t have paddle shifters. I’d swap out the sunroof for the paddles any day. Fuel efficiency is around 10.5kmpl in the city, thanks to the stop-go nature of Pune city traffic, climbing up to 12.5kmpl on a longer drive on the highway. The brakes are good but the ride quality is on the stiffer side, especially since the heavy rains have ruined the roads. But then again the firmness is what makes it feel energetic and fun.
The driving position is rather high-set and for the first few days I kept trying to lower the seat. But on the plus side the high seat is very kind on my mum’s knees. And of course the visibility is great for manoeuvring through city traffic. Back seat space isn’t great, the Nexon and XUV300 are more spacious, but that said, it is not too tight by the standards of this class either.
Ultimately though, for `11 lakh you get fantastic value — great styling, fun to drive, loaded with features and without the compromises you would associate with this segment. No wonder there are long waiting lists for the Hyundai Venue even in the current times. ⌧
