Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

Maruti’s MPV makes for a great support car thanks to its brilliant third row flexibility

ICAN’T BELIEVE THAT IT’S ALREADY been over six months with the Ertiga. I was asked to trade my Santro with the Ertiga and initially it was really cumbersome to live with a long and wide seven-seater. But it has been a great experience.

When Abhishek and I went for the first drive sometime last year, we were really impressed with the space, interiors and the long list of features. In fact, the interior space is its USP and that’s what we have come to love during its tenure. When you fold the second and third row seats, you get a flat-bed like space which allowed me and my fellow shutterbugs to take those tracking shots you see on the pages of these magazines. I have also driven it to Mumbai on several occasions with the seats and boot loaded to the sill. The engine has enough grunt to take on the Lonavala ghat without compromising on the ride quality. It also has one of the nicest steering wheels for a Maruti Suzuki. It isn’t precise but doesn’t feel feather light like the Baleno or Ignis.

The Apple CarPlay and Android Auto equipped instrument cluster is a boon and offers a great user interface. However, the Bluetooth has a mind of its own and sometimes it refused to work and had to be completely switched off to get it going again. The fuel efficiency too is great for a car its size. I have been consistently eking out about 14kmpl in city conditions, despite my heavy right foot. On the highways, the figure even stretched too 18kmpl at times. The mildhybrid technology is no gimmick; the autoengine off worked perfectly, without any hassles. And the tiny battery too helps when you require that sudden burst of acceleration, especially in urban conditions.

It saddens me to see the Ertiga go, for it has been a great six months with Maruti’s practical and comfortable MPV. Now, when is that S-presso launch happening? ⌧
