Renault Captur

Our chief designer is thoroughly impressed with the Captur as he takes it on a drive to Mahabaleshwar

Renault has hit the sweet spot with the chassis when it comes to the ride and handling

MY CAPTUR IS MOSTLY SUBJECT TO office commutes but all work and no play, makes for a boring Aslam, they say. The same applies to the Captur as well which truly belongs on the highway. And to stretch its legs, I had invited a couple of friends from Mumbai for a weekend jaunt to Mahabaleshwar.

Well, the Captur is not a particularly spacious SUV but the tall seats and open cabin doesn’t make it claustrophobic, despite having four, full-sized healthy Mallus on board. And mind you, we travel with a lot of luggage but that’s where the handy boot comes into play. The bootlip is slightly high but manageable. It even managed to swallow our luggage for the weekend and we were all set to go.

I have always spoken about the Captur’s long legs. And on the highway, even the not-so-peppy petrol engine feels at home. Despite cruising at 120kmph on the MumbaiBengaluru highway, the Captur managed to go 15km on every litre of fuel. The driving position is very SUV-ish too and makes you feel like you’re in command of the vehicle and also the road. And roads in this part of Maharashtra aren’t really great, mind you. But the Captur, with its velvety ride quality, is just so amazing on bad roads! Renault has managed to hit the sweet spot with the Duster’s chassis, when it comes to ride and handling and the Captur reiterated the fact. It even adds a dose of sophistication thanks to the upmarket interiors and well-rounded exteriors (Don’t forget that Aslam is the in-house chief designer - Ed). Honestly, the Captur’s design has grown on me and full marks to Renault India for that. We all are now aware that the Captur we have isn’t the same as the one that’s sold in EMEA. But the desi Captur looks almost the same and also gets a very SUV-ish stance in addition. For the same reason, I now have over 300 pictures of the Captur in my photo bank.

I digress. The Captur was so impressive in our bout round the Khambatki and Pasarni ghats (Gata Loop of Maharashtra. Debatable), that some of my friends are willing to join the Captur tribe. We are just a handful, so more is always better. ⌧
