Final Form
The 488 returns as a limited-run, track-only special and it is absolutely bonkers
THE 488 GT MODIFICATA IS THE RESULT OF YEARS OF EXPERIENCE IN MOTORSPORT
FERRARI HAS FOUND HUGE SUCCESS with its 488 GT3 and GTE racecars, with the former winning over 350 races and the latter proving its mettle at Le Mans. Before the 488 gets completely replaced, the company has made one final iteration — the 488 GT Modificata. It is the result of years of experience in motorsport and a drizzle of lunacy because it is a track-only, limited-run supercar built for customer racing.
From the outside, the purpose of the 488 GT Modificata is clear — function over form. The big rear wing, massive splitters and numerous vents aren’t fooling anyone into thinking it was designed to look good. That’s not to say that it doesn’t — it has a wonderfully raw sense of beauty about it. The interior is stripped out, as you’d expect in a car like this and it gets a heavy dose of carbonfibre everywhere.
Unlike the road-going 488 Pista, the 488 GT Modificata isn’t inspired by Ferrari’s racecars, it is a Ferrari racecar. The suspension is lifted directly from the 488 GTE, the braking system is developed hand-in-hand with Brembo, and the ABS system is taken from the 2020 488 GT3 Evo.
At the heart of the 488 GT Modificata is the same twin-turbo V8 with one big difference — it isn’t tied down by the FIA’s Balance of Performance. So, the engineers have let its hair down with an output of 690bhp. The extra power is handled by a carbonfibre clutch and a new racing gearbox. And the GT Modificata features reworked aero to keep it planted at speed, resulting in an astonishing 1000kg of downforce at 230kmph.
Allotments for the 488 GT Modificata are initially reserved only for those who have raced in Competizioni GT with Ferrari or Club Competizioni GT recently. In fact, aside from track days, the 488 GT Modificata is built specifically for use in Club Competizioni GT in 2021. A total of five events have been planned for now, at the Virginia International Raceway,
Monza, Watkins Glen, Suzuka and Nürburgring, and the Finali Mondiali. And if you’re lucky enough to snag one, like all other Ferraris, you can customise the 488 GT Modificata to your liking too. Sure, Apple CarPlay and wireless chargers aren’t on the options list, but we’re looking forward to seeing the 488 GT Modificata in some really cool liveries. We’ll take ours in the colours of Kimi’s F2007, so it can double up as a Christmas gift.
