IN THE EVER-EVOLVING REALM of smartphones, where the term “flagship” once signified top-notch materials and cutting-edge specs, the advent of foldable devices has ushered in a new era. Samsung, a pioneer in the foldable space, recently unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold5. After spending some quality time with the Fold5, it’s clear that Samsung’s years of expertise in foldable tech shine through in this device.

The star of the show is undoubtedly the large and immersive 7.6-inch Foldable Dynamic AMOLED display. Its vibrant colours and crisp clarity make it a joy for content consumption. Samsung’s One UI adds another layer of user-friendly features, with multitasking capabilities that allow you to run multiple apps simultaneously in split-screen mode. The foldable design, seamlessly transitioning from a tablet-sized screen to a pocketable ‘phonesize’ device, positions the Fold5 as a practical choice for creators, artists and those in stock trading who crave a sizable screen without lugging around a bulky tablet or laptop. However, the persistent crease in the display, though improved from the initial Fold version, still leaves something to be desired. Newer players in the foldable market like the OnePlus Open have managed to make the crease seamless. In a market where competitors are ironing out these wrinkles, Samsung has to up its game in this department. In terms of durability, the phone comes with an IPX8 rating for water resistance and has Gorilla Glass Victus protection for the outer screen. The inside screen is made of their UTG material, which is not as durable as the outer screen.

Under the hood, the Fold5 boasts the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, a chipset tailored for Samsung’s flagship devices and has increased clock speeds compared to the normal 8 Gen 2. Courtesy of the higher clock speed, it handles demanding tasks seamlessly. The Fold5 comes with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto camera. The cameras do a pretty decent job capturing scenes, but these are not flagship level. In essence, the Galaxy Z Fold5 caters to those looking for a smartphone experience beyond the conventional flagship. ⌧
