Ease of doing business: Govt aims a slot in top 50 in next ranking

Financial Chronicle - - PLAN, POLICY -

INDIA improved its ranking in ease of doing business—jumping 23 spots in a year—but the government is not satiated as yet. It is aiming high and has started working hard towards finding a place among top 50 global list.

The central board of indirect taxes and customs (CBIC) has asked its officers to reduce compliance burden for the industry and step up outreach programme for the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector. Noting that CBIC’s sustained commitment and efforts towards trade facilitation has helped India take the huge leap from 146th rank to 80th rank in trading across borders, the board chief has urged all the staff to work towards further improving the ranking.

"I would urge all of you to participate with renewed zeal in this transformative exercise to enable the country reach the top 50," CBIC chief S Ramesh has said in a communication to the employees.

The World Bank’s latest report on ‘Ease of doing business’ saw India jumping 23 notches to reach 77th position out of 190 countries. As per the survey released last month, India has made a significant improvement of 53 places in the last two years. India figures among top 10 improvers in the current year's ease of doing business survey. In the meantime, the CBIC boss has directed the nodal officers to expeditiously resolve the issues raised by small firms.

"All nodal officers of CBIC have already reached out to this sector across 80 MSME cluster locations in India to provide a conducive environment for their growth. I am confident that all our zonal chief commissioners shall take this opportunity to scale up the facilitation measures for the benefit of the MSME sector," Ramesh wrote on November 2.
