INTERNATIONAL orders for metropolis train sets have lifted Sricity facility, 75 km off Chennai, as a global manufacturing centre of French company Alstom. After delivering Sydney orders, Alstom is now beginning to work on light metro project of Montreal.

The Sricity facility was mainly meant for meeting the fast growing demand from metro rail projects in different cities in India. While the demand is robust, the facility is also bagging international orders.

The facility has bagged its second international order from Montreal metro project. The order is to provide 212 cars for a total value of 1.4 billion euros. Production will begin from early 2019.

The facility has delivered the last of the 22 Metropolis trains for Sydney Metro. The on-time delivery has established Alstom’s Sricity site as the one of the group’s global manufacturing centres of excellence for rolling stock, the company said. Alstom had won a contract to deliver 22 six-car train sets as well as the CBTC signalling system, for North West Rail Link, Australia’s biggest public transport project and first fully-automated metro network in 2014. The total value of the order was 280 million euros.

“We firmly believe in India’s role as a manufacturing and engineering hub for international markets,” said Ling Fang, Alstom Senior vice president, Asia Pacific.

The train sets designed for Sydney is based on the internationally proven Metropolis train platform.

“Alstom is leveraging its high calibre Indian talent pool to engage with new customers and explore high-potential markets. All these factors establish our solutions as a benchmark technically, economically and environmentally for mobility in India and Asia Pacific,” said Alain Spohr, managing director for India.

Alstom’s Sricity facility began production in 2014. With an annual production capacity of 240 cars, the site has also delivered metros for the cities of Chennai, Kochi and Lucknow. In 2011, Alstom received the Rs 1,471 crore order for the supply of 168 metro coaches (42 train sets of 4 cars each) for the Chennai Metro. For the Mumbai metro it received an order worth Rs 2,500 crore in June 2018. It will deliver 31 train sets of 8 cars each (total 248 metro cars) for Mumbai project and the production beginning next year will be completed in about five years.

For Kochi, Alstom first secured a contract worth 85 million euro to supply 75 standard gauge metro cars and the delivery started in 2016. It received additional contracts worth 65 million euro or Rs 500 crore in 2015 to supply signaling, telecom and electrification solution.
