LA BODEGA NEGRA

Harper's Bazaar (India) - - BAZAAR ESCAPE -

If you can get past the fact that the doorway to this charming, seductive little restaurant is through the entrance of a neon-lit sex shop in Soho, then you are sure to be delighted with the experience offered here.“Darling, give me your handbag and dinner is on the house,” exclaims the maître d’ in drainpipe leather trousers and a fluorescent yellow viscose shirt, his eyes not leaving my clutch, as our group walks in. The casual mood set, we stepped into La Bodega Negra (literally meaning The Dark Cellar), whose dungeon-like setup, with low ceilings and dim lighting (great for a first date), is home to fine Mexican food. The restaurant’s tequila-based cocktails will leave you feeling light-headed, the libations matching the food on offer. I began the meal with baby tacos, crisp and flavourful, served with guacamole, salsa, and various other dips, and followed this up with shanks of lamb so tender, the meat just fell off the bone. With loud music and boisterous waiters, the restaurant is perfect for the young and edgy. Don’t be surprised if you end up rubbing elbows with footballers and their girlfriends, rockstars, and celebrity revellers looking to let their hair down.
