My doctor told me I have an enlarged heart. What is an enlarged heart? What are the symptoms and tests for it? Pratap Kumar, Mumbai
An enlarged heart is a generalised terminology used when any modality of investigation suggests that the size of the heart seems inappropriately more than what it should normally be. This is commonly detected on a chest X-ray. The easiest way to diagnose it is to do a 2 D Echocardiography and Doppler studies which will give an accurate diagnosis. If the Echo shows anything, then further investigations will be required.
