Pro­grammes that help peo­ple quit smok­ing or overeat­ing should be of­fered with­out cost, sug­gests a study. Re­searchers found that free coun­selling at­tracted a large num­ber of pa­tients and re­fer­rals. But when the fund­ing ceased and a fee was charged, the num­ber of pa­tients who fol­lowed through with coun­selling dropped by 81%.
