Viacom 18 Vice President Sapangeet Rajwant on her flab-to-fit journey

“I was not always fat, but after being diagnosed with thyroid, I started putting on weight. And within a short span of time, I realised that my weight was ruling my body. “I then decided that my illness won’t define me anymore. I took charge of my body to get back in shape.”

THE WEIGHT LOSS JOURNEY “I started with the basics. I started exercising and went to a dietician to help me with my weight loss. “I started walking on the treadmill for one hour religiously. I believe cardio exercises are the best thing to do to attain good fitness levels. “I then consulted dietician Kashish Alimchandani who planned out a simple and a doable diet plan for me. It included: A hot glass of water in the morning, as soon as I woke up. Post water, few walnuts, to kick-start my metabolism. Breakfast was two egg whites or poha. Lunch was a green leafy vegetable (or a protein vegetable) with one bran roti. Seasonal fruits and a snack, mostly makhanas, in the evening. Dinner was grilled veggies and something protein along with it.

“Basically, my whole diet comprised lots of proteins and less carbs. Along with that, I was advised to drink chaas, lots of green tea and hot water all day. “I continued this regime consistently for three months. My thyroid levels came under control and so did my weight. I felt a lot lighter and confident about myself.”

MAINTAINING THE WEIGHT “But, of course, maintenance is the most important factor of any weight loss journey. So after my weight loss, I am on a maintenance diet where I have little rice, more wheat, and a small quantity of starch, as during my weight loss I had not touched them at all. Apart from that, I continue my same diet and exercise routine daily. “Now, I work out five days in a week. I have joined a yoga class for three days a week and for the remaining two days, I do my normal cardio in the gym. Along with that, I also walk every day. “I believe that weight loss is not as hard as people make it sound. At the same time, one should not make it so strict that it’s hard to stick to the plan. For normal weight loss, one just needs to try and avoid eating outside food and if it’s unavoidable, then just order grilled dishes or sautéed veggies. And reduce alcohol; that helps in reducing weight instantly.” HARSHA KANAL
