Proper Walking Technique
Lead with your chest (not with your head), which naturally promotes arm swing. Keep your shoulders relaxed and down, but not hunched. Swing your arms from the shoulders, not your elbows. Let the heel of your foot touch the ground first, then roll your weight forwards to your toes. To maintain good posture while walking: Hold your head up, point your eyes forward, and keep your chin parallel to the ground. It may help to pretend you’re balancing a book on your head. Hold your back in a neutral position, neither arched nor slumped. Swing your arms front to back, not side to side. Maintain a comfortable stride. If you find that walking increases back pain, you might be walking too slowly - this loads the spine.
