SLOW PROGRESS 12 people have been rounded up till now; report says Gurkirat had head injury
AMRITSAR: Stepping up efforts to crack the Gurkirat muder cases, the Amritsar police claimed to have rounded up four more persons.
The police, which on Saturday claimed to have got some vital clues, are yet to nab the killers of 10-year-old boy, whose body was found metres away from his house in Verka on November 16.
Since early Sunday morning, the police were keeping a close eye in the area and even rounded up a few people during raids. The police claimed that the people detained were from an area adjoining the place where the victim child’s family lived.
Talking to HT, ADCP (crime), HS Brar, said, “Four people have been rounded from the adjoining area and their questioning is still going on. The case is yet to be solved.”
The police also said that as per the postmortem report, Gurkirat had received a head injury.
The role of the police had come under scanner when the residents of the area and even family alleged that the police failed to show the urgency when the boy was kidnapped.
After the body of Gurkirat was found just metres away from his house on November 16, the police search operation of the area also came under scanner.
Gurkirat’s family agreed to cremate the body on Saturday only after the police department suspended the Verka SHO and also ordered a departmental inquiry against him.
The Punjab Human Rights Organisation had also flayed the police for its lackadaisical attitude and said that had the police taken the case seriously from Day One, the boy’s killing could have been averted.
Gurkirat was kidnapped on November 7 and the police registered a missing person’s report same day and later made it a kidnapping case on November 9.
As the police claimed to have searched the area comprehensively on November 15, all were shocked when the body of Gurkirat was found dumped in the street right opposite his house the next day.
Talking to HT Amritsar Police Commissioner Ram Singh said, “We have got some vital lead and till now investigation is moving on in the right direction. Some people have been rounded up and they are being questioned.”
The police till Sunday had rounded up around 12 people from the locality, but many were let off after questioning.
