Free travel, medical aid for Emergency victims
Khattar says state government would constitute high-level committee to identify such victims
ROHTAK: Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Friday announced to provide free travel and medical facilities to the people of the state who were imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by then prime minister Indira Gandhi in the country from 1975 to 77.
The chief minister, who was addressing a gathering here on Friday after honouring 65 Emergency victims from the state, said the government would provide free travel facility to Emergency victims and their wives in ordinary buses and 75% concession in Volvo buses, besides free treatment in government hospitals.
The chief minister said the government would constitute a high-level committee to identify such victims. He said those who had struggled during the days of Emergency should submit their record to the deputy commissioner concerned.
Khattar announced that victims of Emergency would be identified and enlisted by August 15 and would be honoured by giving them ‘ Tamar Patras’ (commendation plaques) on Republic Day.
The government, he said, would contact such victims and their memories would be recorded and videographed.
The chief minister said the freedom of press was curtailed during the Emergency era, but the writers and litterateurs had written poems, articles and satirical pieces.
“The government has decided to publish such literature. Therefore, a ‘Shubhra Jyotsna Granth’ will be brought out on Republic Day,” he added.
He appealed to the people that if anyone in the state had such access to such material, he should submit it to the deputy commissioner concerned as it would be included in the proposed publication.

Khattar appealed to girls to learn taekwondo for selfdefence. He was addressing a gathering after inaugurating the three-day National Taekwondo Championship (12-14 years) at the Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak on Friday.
He said girls could use this martial skill for self-defence. He announced to upgrade the indoor stadium at MDU by installing air-conditioners in the hall and also proposed to name the stadium after Dr Mangal Sen.
