PATNA: The director of a local school was thrashed to death by angry villagers after two students of the school were found dead in a water body near its premises on Sunday.

The director, Devendra Prasad, died at the Patna Medical College Hospital where he was taken in a critical condition.

The incident took place at Nirpur village, under Nalanda police station limits, about 75 km south-west of Patna.

Nalanda superintendent of police Siddharth said the Devendra Prasad Sinha School went by the acronym ‘DPS’ but was not related to the wellknown chain of schools.

“This school is a two-room establishment. The district education officer has been told to find out which board it is affiliated to,” the SP said.

Siddharth said two chil- dren of 7 and 8 years of age were among four who went to a water body near the school. “It appears they had gone there to relieve themselves when the duo slipped and fell into the water,” he said.

On recovering the bodies, the villagers accused the school authorities of foul play and thrashed the director, the superintendent of police said.

They also torched a school van and set two rooms of the school on fire using a cooking gas cylinder. Six policemen were injured in the incident.
