DRONE SEIZED AFTER FLY-OVER

Police have seized a drone which was flown over Wimbledon as some of the world’s top players warmed up for the Grand Slam in south-west London. Officers are investigat­ing the incident after being alerted to a man flying a drone over the All England Club from a nearby golf course on Saturday morning. Inspector Roger Robinson of Merton police said: “It is an offence to fly a drone within 50 metres of a structure. Anyone intending to fly a drone should give prior considerat­ion to the surroundin­g landscape and any structures or venues.

Wawrinka has no interest in a Fab Five club

Being a member of tennis’ Big Four might be the burning ambition of many players but Stan Wawrinka is in no rush to join the ranks and redefine that club as the Fab Five. The man who belted down backhand bullets to crush Novak Djokovic’s French Open dream, thus denying the Serb a chance to complete his collection of grand slam titles, now owns two majors thanks to his success at Roland Garros earlier this month. “Honestly I don’t try to compare myself to them or try to be part of a group. I just want to do the best I can in my career,” Wawrinka said.

Bencic credits Hingis for title

Belinda Bencic, who clinched her the first title of the career at Eastbourne on Saturday, and hailed the influence of superstar compatriot Martina Hingis. The trophy break- through for the 18-year-old Swiss denied the ninth-seeded Agnieszka and 2012 Wimbledon finalist, a second title at Devonshire Park. Bencic, coached part-time by Martina Hingis and by Hingis’s mother Melanie Molitor, was playing in the third final of her career. The youngster credited Hingis and her mother with “teaching me everything I know”.

Injury elbows Ferrer out of the Wimbledon

David Ferrer has been forced to withdraw from Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament after the Spaniard suffered an elbow injury. Ferrer, 33, was due to face Britain’s James Ward in the first round of the grass-court Grand Slam, which starts on Monday. But the eighth seed, a Wimbledon quarter-finalist in 2012 and 2013, has decided against risking further damage to the elbow. “David Ferrer has withdrawn from the Gentlemen’s singles due to an elbow injury,” a Wimbledon statement read on Sunday. The former French Open finalist’s place is taken by lucky loser Luca Vanni, with the Italian due to face Ward on Tuesday.
