Jwala-Ashwini enter Canada Open final with straight sets win

CALGARY: Commonweal­th Games silver-medallist duo of Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa entered the women’s doubles final of the Canada Open badminton tournament after the third-seeded pair outplayed Japanese duo of Shiho Tanaka and Koharu Yonemoto 21-17, 21-16 in the semifinal here on Sunday.

JOSHI TIED SIXTH

BALI: Khalin Joshi was the bestplaced Indian golfer as he finished tied sixth at the $76,000 Bali National Golf Championsh­ip here on Sunday. Joshi carded one-under 71 and finished at five-under 288 in tied sixth place. Also in the top10 was Himmat Rai (tied ninth) and Chiragh Kumar (tied 15th). Australian Matthew Giles sank a birdie putt on the last hole to win.

ABHIJEET ON TOP

NEW DELHI: Grandmaste­r Abhijeet Gupta remained on course for regaining the crown after a crushing victory against defending champion Deep Sengupta in the seventh round of the Commonweal­th Chess championsh­ip here on Sunday. The win means Gupta increased his lead to a full points with Grandmaste­rs Abhijit Kunte, Deepan Chakkravar­thy and Internatio­nal Masters Arghyadip Das and S Ravi Teja are all sharing the second spot with six points.

CHANDOK 12TH

LONDON: Karun Chandok finished 12th at the London ePrix round one here on Saturday. Driving for the Mahindra racing team Chandok clocked 48 minutes 30.379 seconds competing in the secondlast Formula E race of the season. 26-year-old Sebastian Buemi of Switzerlan­d clinched the race.
