Police bust robbers’ gang, 5 arrested

Police claimed to have busted a six-member gang of robbers with arrest of five of its members from Goindwal Sahib, 25 km from here on Wednesday.

The robbers were wanted in 20 different cases of theft, robbery, snatching, police sources have said.

Addressing a press conference, senior superinten­dent of police (SSP) DS Mann said station house officer Goindwal inspector Sukhinder Singh acted on a tipoff that a gang is active in the area and planning to strike again.

A team led by the SHO, conducted a raid near Bharowal village on the Goindwal-Tarn Taran link road.

“The robbers were hidden in shrubs. The team successful­ly arrested five members of the gang. One of its members, however, managed to flee,” said the SSP.

The accused have been identified as Gurdev Singh of Khadoor Sahib, Chand Singh of Hansawala village, Hardeep Singh of Khawaspur village, Hardeep Singh of Jandiala Guru, Sonu of Khadoor Sahib. Leader alias Leedo of Dhunda village is absconding.

The police also recovered a country-made pistol, four live cartridges, 10 motorcycle­s, three sharp-edged weapons and ₹40,000 from the possession of culprits.

SSP said a case under sections 399 (making preparatio­n to commit dacoity), 402 (assembling for purpose of committing dacoity) of the IPC and the Arms Act has been registered against the gang members at Goindwal Police Station.
