President weighed in on son’s statement
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump did weigh in on drafting a misleading statement about his son’s meeting with a Russian lawyer as “any father would do,” the White House has confirmed.
White House spokesperson Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Donald Trump Jr’s statement was not “misleading” or inaccurate, accusing the Democrats of using it as a “PR stunt.”
Huckabee Sanders said: “He certainly didn’t dictate. But he weighed in, offered suggestions, like any father would do.”
Earlier, Jay Sekulow, one of the attorneys representing Trump in the Russia investigation, had denied that his client was involved with crafting the statement about Donald Trump Jr’s June 2016 meeting. The Washington Post on Monday reported that Trump indeed dictated the statement.
Trump’s son-in-law said Trump campaign could not have colluded with Russia because the team was too dysfunctional and disorganised to coordinate with a foreign government.
Jared Kushner made the comment on Monday during a closed-door session with congressional interns.
He was responding to a question about special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into the alleged Russian links of team Trump. AGENCIES
